The John Adams College Vision

John Adams College
Applying the Wisdom of the Past
To the Problems of Today and Tomorrow;
Promoting Liberty through Virtue

Our Vision

John Adams College is founded on a simple historical observation:
Progress is driven not by consensus, but by courageous thinkers willing to question.

Most educational institutions are structured to preserve continuity — to train students to operate efficiently within existing social, economic, and intellectual systems. This model serves society well and will always be necessary.

But a different kind of education is required for those who feel compelled to explore first principles, challenge assumptions, and venture into intellectual territory where no clear path exists. JAC exists to educate those disruptors — responsibly, intelligently, and with moral seriousness.

History shows that such individuals are rarely recognized in their own time. Socrates was executed. Galileo was condemned. Many of the architects of modern political and economic life were regarded as dangerous radicals. Only later did society recognize that their refusal to conform was generative rather than destructive.

John Adams College provides an institutional home for such minds — not because they are superior, but because their ambitions require a different preparation.

Why Provo?

Our location in the American West is not incidental. The frontier has always symbolized independence, risk, and the courage to begin without guarantees. Provo reflects that spirit.

Just as the western pioneers crossed physical frontiers to build new communities, JAC seeks to cultivate intellectual pioneers prepared to cross uncertainty and create new systems.

What makes JAC different?

1. Education for the Unknown

Most programs train students to apply known solutions. JAC trains students to confront problems whose solutions do not yet exist.

2. Unconventional by Design

Our curriculum, governance, and pedagogy are intentionally independent of prevailing academic trends. This freedom allows us to study ideas for their truth and enduring power — not their contemporary popularity.

3. Socratic, Not Scripted

Knowledge is not transmitted here; it is tested, challenged, and earned through sustained dialogue. Students learn to defend ideas under pressure — the same skill required of founders, leaders, and innovators.

4. Enormous Intellectual Demands

The reading load at JAC exceeds that of most colleges. This is deliberate. Pioneering thought requires deep familiarity with the best that has already been envisioned.

The JAC Student Mission Statement encapsulates
these ideas:

John Adams College is preparing men and women
to enter the world defending liberty,
standing in humility, and upholding virtue.

John Adams College graduates have been accepted into graduate programs at Columbia, Rutgers, Ralston, Ashland, and Antioch universities. Our graduates have also received fellowships at The Spectator World in Washington DC and Encounter Books in New York City. To the John Adams founding Board of Trustees, this is a proof of concept.

The Future Vision for John Adams College:

  • Future JAC graduates will achieve success just as our past graduates have
  • Leadership and Faculty will continue to improve courses and curriculum
  • John Adams College will continue to grow

With your help, John Adams College will reach these goals!
