
Ph.D., political science, Fordham University. MA., liberal arts, St. John’s College, Santa Fe. Experience teaching political theory, American politics, and Great Books courses, at a number of institutions, including the University of Virginia, Hampden-Sydney College, Washington and Lee University, Skidmore College, and Utah Valley University. Carl has written essays on politics, constitutionalism, film, rock music, Homer, Plato, Milton, and Ellison for the blog, and then substack, “Postmodern Conservative.” He has also written book reviews for the journal Perspectives on Political Science. He is the co-editor of Totalitarianism on Screen: The Art and Politics of “The Lives of Others,” the author of “The Five Conceptions of American Liberty,” an essay published in National Affairs, and the writer of a newer substack, “Dissident Conservative.” He enjoys leading the weekly meetings of the Provo Great Books Club, floating down the Provo River with his wife, exploring Utah canyon country, and substitute teaching when he gets a kindergarten assignment.
